The National Defense University invites interested persons to apply for the position of Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor of Logistics which is available on or about July 10, 2009 on the civilian faculty of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Washington, D.C.
The National Defense University (NDU) educates military and civilian leaders through teaching, research, and outreach in national security strategy, national military strategy, and national resource strategy; joint and multi-national operations; information strategies operations, and resource management; acquisition; and regional defense and security studies. The NDU is an information-age university for national security leaders; a learning organization founded on knowledge management; and the center of excellence and innovation for professional military education in joint, multinational and interagency operations.
NDU has four colleges (National War College, Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Industrial Resource Management College, and Joint Forces Staff College), three regional centers three research centers, one school, two institutes, seven special programs and a world-class library. The NDU is fully accredited by the Middle States Association to award several masters degrees and is considered the nation’s premier Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) University.
The Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF), a component college of the NDU, is a senior service college of the Department of Defense (DoD) and has the mission of preparing selected military officers and civilians of the DoD, other federal agencies, and selected foreign nationals to assume responsibilities at the general officer and senior executive levels. The College’s academic program focuses upon issues related to national security strategy and resource management. Students are enrolled in the ICAF for a full academic year commencing in August of each year.
Major Duties: The Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor of Logistics at the ICAF will develop, lecture and conduct graduate level seminar instruction within the Supply Chain Management Concentration Program; participate in an Industry Study; teach military strategy and logistics at a Joint Professional Military Education Senior Level College; supervise student research and act as a primary faculty and research advisor for selected students; and participate in outreach activities in furtherance of the mission of the National Defense University. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to conduct research on bringing business supply chain practices into military applications; assist with program management of the Supply Chain Management Concentration Program; and assume responsibilities of the Program’s director in the director’s absence.
Qualifications:
1. Applicants should have progressive professional experience in logistics or supply chain management; evidence of maturity as a scholar, including a substantial record of continuing research and service contributions in logistics or supply chain management or policy; and extensive publications of books, monographs, and pieces in recognized professional journals. Full-time professional teaching experience at the university level at the rank of associate professor or professor is preferred. Applicants will be rated by appointed subject mater experts with the purpose of identifying the best-qualified candidates on the basis of the criteria listed below and the potential to successfully accomplish the duties.
2. The selectee for this position will be offered an initial appointment of three-years, which may be renewed in one to three year increments.
3. Applicants must possess a degree from a regionally-accredited university or college, appropriate for the Assistant/Associate/Professor level, as indicated in the Highly Qualified Criteria below.

6. Travel requirement for this position Occasional. You may be required to travel up 20-30% of the time.

Highly qualifying criteria
Professor: Candidates at the Professor level must possess a doctoral degree in logistics or supply chain management from a regionally-accredited university or college and have significant professional experience a relevant area with documented, outstanding teaching experience at a regionally-accredited college or university involving full time teaching; significant service/outreach to the university; an exemplary record of scholarship/research in logistics or supply chain management; extensive publications in recognized professional and scholarly journals. In exceptional circumstances, candidates without a doctorate or teaching experience may be considered if they possess extensive experience implementing logistics and supply chain management policy at very senior levels in business or government and have up-to-date knowledge of the professional logistics or supply chain management literature.
Associate Professor: Candidates at the Associate Professor level must possess a master’s degree in logistics or supply chain management from a regionally-accredited university or college and should have progressively professional experience a relevant area with documented, outstanding teaching experience at the assistant professor level at a regionally-accredited college or university involving full time teaching; significant service/outreach to the university; scholarship/research accomplishments in logistics or supply chain management; and publications of books, monographs, and pieces in recognized professional and scholarly journals. In exceptional circumstances, candidates without a master’s degree or teaching experience may be considered if they possess extensive experience making and implementing logistics and supply chain management policy at senior levels in business or government.
Assistant Professor: Candidates at the Assistant Professor level must possess a master’s degree in logistics or supply chain management from a regionally-accredited university or college and should have substantial professional experience making and implementing logistics and supply chain management policy at senior levels in business or government, and/or teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
1. This is a National Defense University (NDU) civilian Faculty position as provided under Title 10. The first year will be probationary. Appointment will be for three years and may be renewed in one to three year increments thereafter.
2. Must be able to obtain and retain a SECRET Clearance.
3. Must be physically able and willing to travel.
