The David Eccles School of Business’s Department of Operations and Information Systems at the University of Utah seeks to fill a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level in operations management beginning July 2010. A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline such as operations management, operations research or industrial engineering is required.

The successful candidate will be expected to produce high quality research in operations management. She or he will also be encouraged to collaborate as the opportunity arises with faculty in information systems, marketing and other departments and disciplines, including those outside the School of Business. In addition, the candidate will be expected to teach classes in operations management, with the possibility of teaching at all levels (undergraduate, MBA and PhD). The University of Utah values candidates who have experience working in settings with students from diverse backgrounds, and who possess a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for historically underrepresented students.

The David Eccles School of Business faculty is well-recognized for its research and scholarship. It was ranked 22nd in the world for research output in the most recent Financial Times Executive MBA Rankings. The Department of Operations and Information Systems (OIS) is home to faculty in information systems (IS) and operations management (OM). The Department currently offers bachelors and masters degrees in IS, a masters of statistics degree and PhD emphases in OM and IS. An undergraduate major in OM is planned to begin in fall 2010. Each winter, the OIS Department hosts 3 research conferences that attract scholars from across the world.

The University of Utah is located in Salt Lake City, site of the 2002 Winter Olympics, at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains. Adjacent to the campus is a Research Park, home to more than 30 technology-oriented businesses with close research and operational ties to the University. Salt Lake City is the state capital and home to many businesses and nonprofit organizations. It is known as a hotbed for technology-oriented business startups that provide great opportunities for student learning and research. The metropolitan area has a population of approximately one million residents and is a major urban center in the intermountain west. Salt Lake City has extensive arts and cultural activities and a major airport close to downtown and was recently ranked as the 15th best city in the United States to “live and launch.” It is at the foot of the Rocky Mountains and has four distinct seasons, including mild winters and warm summers and offers excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation, including easy access to the mountains, the red rock country of the Colorado Plateau, and eight national parks.
