College of Service Operations

College Conference: The 2010 Mini-Conference of POMS College of Service Operations will be held on May 6th, 2010 in Vancouver, BC, Canada, prior to the POMS 2010 Meeting.

It will be held at the downtown facility of the Segal Graduate School of Business, Simon Fraser University (http://www.sfu.ca/mecs/segal+school/meeting.html). The facility is at 500 Granville St. in Vancouver, 0.6 miles from the conference hotel. Our SFU faculty hosts are Ian McCarthy and Sudheer Gupta.

Past conferences:
   May 2009 Orlando (in conjunction with the annual POMS meeting)
   June 2008 London (hosted by London Business School)
   June 2006 Monterey, Ca. (hosted by Naval Postgraduate School)
   December 2004 New York City (hosted by Columbia Business School)

The mission of the POMS College of Service Operations is to:

  • Establish and nurture a community of scholars and practitioners who are interested in the research and teaching of Operations Management in Services as well as the practice of Operations Management in Service industries.
  • Formulate research as well as teaching agenda with regard to service operations so as to spark more and better research and pedagogy in the critical emerging areas of service operations.
  • Provide opportunities for people with common interests in research and teaching to interact with one another by organizing activities such as specialized conferences, workshops, and other events on topics associated with Operations in Services.

All members of POMS will be eligible to join the College of Service Operations. Annual dues of $25 will be collected along with the annual dues of POMS.

The board members of college will be elected from among the membership of the CSO. The President of the College will represent the college on the board of POMS.

The college will promote and guest edit special issues of Production and Operations Management.

The college will organize an annual conference focusing on the current topics of interest to members. The college's first annual conference took place in 2004. Starting in 2010, conferences are planned to be in conjunction with the POMS annual conference in even numbered years.

A wiki on teaching materials in Operations Management has been created by Carrie Queenan (c_queenan@nd.edu). Included are discussions and more information on cases, classroom games, and other topics.
