An International Society to Extend and Integrate Knowledge Pertaining to Production and Operations Management

News

Dear Emerging Scholars Program Alumnus,

Greetings from POMS! We hope that this note finds you well and continuing on the path of ever greater scholarly pursuits!

We are happy to note that the Emerging Scholars Program (ESP) continues to be a resounding success year after year and we build upon the feedback received by alumni such as yourself. In order to make the ESP even better, the organizing committee is holding an "ESP Alumni Meet" in 2008. It will be held immediately after the regular ESP session, which is currently scheduled for Sunday, May 11 2007. The intent is to rekindle contact with past cohorts at ESP and forge new ties with Alumni from earlier/later years as well as with participants from this year's ESP. We expect to meet in a relaxed and informal setting. Please consider this note as an invitation to the Alumni Meet.

POMS Board in its meeting in September, 2007 approved the creation of establishing the College of Behavioral Operations Management. Martin Starr was asked to lead the efforts to establish this college. Martin has suggested that POMS’ members who are interested in creating this college should meet in a session in the POMS 2008 conference in San Diego. Nominations, including self-nominations, are invited for new Fellows of POMS.

Designation as a POMS Fellow is the most prestigious honor awarded by our Society, and is given for life. It is intended to recognize POMS members who have made exceptional intellectual contributions to our profession and Society through their research and teaching. Although loyal service to the Society, in administrative, elected, or editorial assignments, is not by itself a sufficient qualification for this award, it can strengthen the case of a member who has also become a thought-leader in our field. To be eligible, a candidate must have been a member of POMS during four out of the previous five years.

July 19, 2007 -- After almost a year of effort by many people, we're happy to announce that the newly redesigned POMS.org website, which you're looking at right now, has been launched. The new site is based on a web-based content management system that allows a new online editorial board (see below) to manage the website faster and more easily. It is also more technically scalable, which should provide improved responsiveness and up-time at lower operating costs.

However, the launch has not been without its hiccups (we apologize for the downtime); getting the new host to complete our technical setup took a bit longer than we expected. We should be in full production mode by the end of July.

In the meantime, please explore the site, familiarize yourself with the new navigation structure, and try out the search function (upper right on every page). We will be tweaking the menus in the next few months, but layout changes should be minimal. If you have comments or suggestions, please send them to Craig Froehle, Online Editor-in-Chief.

The new POMS.org Online Editorial Board consists of:

Editor-in-Chief: Craig Froehle, University of Cincinnati

Online Editors:
    - Renu Agarwal, Macquarie University
    - Paulo Goncalves, MIT
    - Greg Heim, Texas A&M
    - Changyue Luo, New Mexico Institute of Technology
    - Bo van der Rhee, Nyenrode Business University
