To: Emerging Scholars Program Alumnus

Dear Emerging Scholars Program Alumnus,

Greetings from POMS! We hope that this note finds you well and continuing on the path of ever greater scholarly pursuits!

We are happy to note that the Emerging Scholars Program (ESP) continues to be a resounding success year after year and we build upon the feedback received by alumni such as yourself. In order to make the ESP even better, the organizing committee is holding an "ESP Alumni Meet" in 2008. It will be held immediately after the regular ESP session, which is currently scheduled for Sunday, May 11 2007. The intent is to rekindle contact with past cohorts at ESP and forge new ties with Alumni from earlier/later years as well as with participants from this year's ESP. We expect to meet in a relaxed and informal setting. Please consider this note as an invitation to the Alumni Meet.

Emerging Economies Young Researcher Award Announcement

See below for the announcement for POMS' Emerging Economies Young Researcher Award (EEYRA). Please bring it to the attention of your Ph.D. students who plan to participate and present papers in POMS 2008 conference to be held in San Diego.

The Emerging Economies Young Researcher Award (EEYRA) has been created to establish institutional linkages to reach out to future scholars in emerging economies, and to encourage their development and connection to the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS).

To be eligible for the award, the student must be currently enrolled (at the time of the application) in a Ph.D. program in an Operations Management related field in a country with an emerging economy from one of the three regions Africa, Australasia, and Latin America.

See document below or go to to see more details.

Best wishes

The Production and Operations Management Society (POMS) has instituted the Martin K. Starr Excellence in Production and Operations Management Practice Award to recognize contributions made to the field of Production and Operations Management (POM) by POM practitioners. It is an international award and is open to all POM practitioners from around the world.

Production and Operations Management is now on the Business Week’s list of 20 premier journals (please see below). Business Week uses publications in these 20 journals as one of the three factors for ranking of MBA programs in business schools. The list has 14 research journals and six ethics or practice journals.

Production and Operations Management now joins flagship journals in other disciplines. All other 13 research journals are regarded as flagship research journals in other disciplines by almost every business school: accounting (2 journals), administrative sciences (2), economics (1), finance (2), information systems (1), marketing (2), MS/OR (2), and strategic management (1). Until now operations management was the only discipline missing in the Business Week list.

POMS College of Behavioral Operations Management

POMS Board in its meeting in September, 2007 approved the creation of establishing the College of Behavioral Operations Management. Martin Starr was asked to lead the efforts to establish this college. Martin has suggested that POMS’ members who are interested in creating this college should meet in a session in the POMS 2008 conference in San Diego. Martin Starr, Bjorn Claes and Jo Beale are leading the initial efforts to bring the group together. Please see the call for discussion below and contact any one of them if you have any suggestions or questions.
