Conferences

The 3rd World Conference on Production and Operations Management will provide an international forum for researchers and practitioners to exchange innovative ideas on various topics of POM and the related areas. The first conference was held in Seville, Spain, in 2000 and the second in Cancun, Mexico, 2004. The third conference will be held in Gakushuin University, Tokyo, Japan, hosted by the Japanese Operations Management and Strategy Association (JOMSA), jointly with European Operations Management Association (EurOMA) and Production and Operations Management Society (POMS).

The POMS College of Product Innovation and Technology Manangement (PI&TM) will hold a special conference to bring together researchers and practitioners at the cutting-edge of innovation, new product development, and technology management. The special conference will follow the annual POMS conference and will be held at the UC San Diego’s Rady School of Management in La Jolla, California on May 12-13, 2008.

The POMS College of Service Operations held its third annual conference on July 12 & 13 at London Business School. The theme was "New challenges for Service Operations" and had 77 attendees.

Important Dates

The Conference will open on Monday evening 19 June, 2006 with a Plenary Session followed by a Welcome Reception, and will close with lunch Friday 23 June, 2006. The weather in Shanghai is normally comfortable in June and, while the City is busy, the very heavy summer tourist traffic has not begun.

Venue

The Pudong Campus of CEIBS - Designed by I.M. Pei, the CEIBS campus was completed last year in time for celebration of the School’s 10th Anniversary. The architecture artfully combines Chinese and European themes, resulting in a handsome and functional site for graduate management education. The International POMS 2006 Conference will include morning Plenary sessions in the School’s auditorium. Concurrent sessions will be held in EMBA and MBA classrooms, primarily in Academic Center III. Lunch will be provided each day. Shuttle busses will transport attendees to and from the conference hotels.

POM-CSO 2006 is the second conference of the College of Service Operations. The theme of the conference is Services in the High-Tech Era. This theme reflects the location of the conference, given the prevalence of the high-tech service sector in Northern California. The activities on June 2 are planned to focus on practitioner presentations, with academic talks on June 3. Our invited speakers are Chip Conley (Joie de Vivre Hospitality), Mark Scott (Starizon Health Care Experiences), Harrah’s Casino Revenue Management Group, and others. Our activities will include a Taste of Monterey wine and appetizer social event, Monterey Aquarium, and many other alternative outings on the Peninsula.

The conference will be held at the Carmel Mission Inn in Carmel, California.

Carmel is on the Pacific coast, 115 miles south of San Francisco. The special conference rate is available if booked prior to May 1, 2006. The rate is $106/room plus applicable taxes. We are pleased to announce that the first conference of the POMS College of Product Innovation and Technology Management (PI &TM) will take place in Boston on Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at Boston University.

The registration form and a preliminary conference program are now available.

The conference will focus on the interface between academia and practice, across four sessions:

• Product Portfolio Management
• Distributed Product Development
• Innovation & Technology Commercialization in High Growth/New Businesses
• Process Improvement, Knowledge Management and Organizational Learning

Each session will feature a panel consisting of at least two industry speakers and three academic colleagues. More details of the PI &TM conference agenda will be forthcoming.

The PI &TM Conference will immediately follow the annual POMS conference and will be held at the Boston University School of Management (on Commonwealth Avenue, near Kenmore Square). The registration fee of $75 (for PI &TM College members) includes both breakfast and lunch. Preregistration is required. Deadline for receiving the registration form is 7 April. Seats are limited. They will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

POM-2006, the seventeenth annual conference of the Production and Operations Management Society, will convene in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A. from Friday, April 28 through Monday, May 1, 2006.

Conference Theme: The theme of this year's conference is OM in the New World Uncertainties. The theme addresses the significant changes occurring in the current geopolitical and economic landscapes and the role of OM in this new environment. Unprecedented changes have occurred relative to globalization and offshoring, use of technologies ranging from e- business to RFID, management of global and cross-cultural supply chains, and the focus on corporate and homeland security. Inter-organizational dependence of supply chains has made companies increasingly vulnerable to natural and man- made disasters, such as the 911 attacks, the SARS epidemic, and hurricane Katrina. To remain relevant in this new world economy OM must break beyond functional boundaries and work collaboratively with areas ranging from operations research to marketing to organizational behavior. This new environment is demanding the bridging of theory and empirical research in order to equip OM with currency and corporate relevance. OM has a critical role to play in this new world economy and the theme of this year's conference reflects that.

Conference Venue: The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency Boston, One Avenue de Lafayette, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Located in the heart of Boston, the Hyatt Regency is just one block from Boston Common and adjacent to the Lafayette Corporate Center. It is the perfect location for visitors to experience all the city of Boston has to offer.

The POM-2006 planning team is working very hard in putting together an exciting program. Our goal is to put together a program that will appeal to anyone interested in improving their research productivity, bringing the latest materials to the classroom, or using the latest OM techniques/software in solving OM problems.
